The word probiotics comes from the Greek language meaning "for life". They are defined as live microorganisms that benefit the host by improving the balance of the intestinal microflora. Their use has been documented as far back as 6,000 years ago.
Elie Metchnikoff, the father of modern immunology, spoke highly about the possible health benefits of the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus in his writings at the turn of the last century.
He wrote in his book, The Prolongation of Life, that consumption of live bacteria in the form of Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus…"was beneficial for gastrointestinal health, as well as for health in general and longevity".1
It has only been in the last few decades that conventional medicine has began to scientifically study these friendly bacteria through the use of probiotic supplements.
It is believed that the digestive tract contains over 400 different strains of beneficial bacteria. However, there are many factors in our daily lives that can kill off these friendly bacteria. Some of those factors include:
Once the good bacteria are destroyed, it may take up to three months for them to regenerate, and in some people they never seem to re-establish completely. This can be a dangerous time because bad bacteria and yeasts may grow out of control without the good bacteria to keep them in check. When this happens, a variety of undesirable symptoms and health problems can occur, such as improper digestion and nutrient absorption, gastrointestinal imbalances, as well as many other conditions.
The thought of having a parasite residing in our intestinal tract, or anywhere else in our body can be frightening and repulsive. The truth is, we have a variety of parasites living in us and on us. However, some of them are actually beneficial, while others can be harmful.
There are over 100 types of parasites that can live in a human host, such as hookworms, roundworms, pinworms, tapeworms, and giardia. These parasites are found in wild and domestic animals, and in well water. Exposure to these parasites can cause infection in humans, especially those who have weakened immune systems.
Some conditions that can promote parasitic infections can be excess mucous, an imbalance in the intestinal flora (beneficial bacteria), chronic constipation, and a toxic internal environment. The good news is probiotics may help protect humans against the unpleasant effects of intestinal parasites.
"During the past decade a quickly growing body of evidence suggests that these “good” bacteria can be used in the diet as medicinal therapy and have beneficial effects on intestinal dysfunctions … Even though the majority of published data involve the use of probiotics to treat and prevent gastrointestinal infections, the potential functions of these microorganisms may extend far beyond what was originally conceptualized. Research has shown that probiotics can significantly decrease both the colonization and infection of candida yeast." 2
"Probiotics have been used worldwide and the health benefits associated with them have been noted for some time ... clinical research is quickly accumulating to support the anecdotal evidence of the benefits of probiotic therapy." 2
"Preliminary studies show that some probiotics have the ability to bind and inactivate some carcinogens. They can directly inhibit the growth of some tumors and can inhibit bacteria that may convert pre-carcinogens into carcinogens."3
Presently, probiotics are now being studied for their contribution to maintain health. According to the Harvard Medical School Division of Nutrition, "There is a long history of probiotics being used in various cultures for health promotion and therapeutic purposes." 4
