Myomin and Myomin Plus are all-natural Chinese herbal blends ideal for normalizing estrogen levels in both men and women. Myomin has been shown to help metabolize unhealthy estrogens and promote proper hormonal balance in the body. † Clinical case studies show that Myomin is able to reduce estradiol (estrogen) levels in as little as 10 days.1
Myomin competes with estradiol (the most active form of estrogen) at estrogen receptor sites, and can therefore be especially effective for estrogen-dominant conditions including fibroids, cysts, PMS and hormone related weight gain, among others.† It also acts by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, stopping the conversion of androgens into estrogen. †
Additionally, Myomin can also induce more interferon in the system, which activates natural killer cells, a major component of the immune system. † This action can be beneficial for men with enlarged prostates and for women with uterine fibroids. †
Myomin has been used for:
Clinical studies show that through its aromatase inhibition and estrogen blocking functions, Myomin is able to reduce estradiol and improve estrogen dominant conditions like fibroids, fibrocystic breasts, ovarian cysts, and endometriosis, among others. Myomin can help:
Myomin works as an estrogen blocker by competing with estradiol at the estrogen receptor sites of target cells. This stops the signaling that triggers cell division (growth) of target (estrogen sensitive) tissues.
When estrone and estradiol production is reduced or blocked, the synthesis of estriol, the good estrogen, continues. Estriol has been found to have anticarcinogenic effect. Studies show that estriol provides the benefits that estrone and estradiol do, and may also have a better safety profile.2,3
Oct 2008 - J. Iannetta, DC from ME, has a 57-year-old female patient who had vaginal bleeding. A test on August 18, 2007 showed that she had very high estradiol level for her age: 413 pg/ml. On October 2, 2008, after taking Myomin for 14 months, her estradiol level has reduced significantly to 43 pg/ml.
Hyperaromatization of testosterone, where an enzyme called aromatase converts testosterone into estrogen, is a key contributor to estrogen dominance. Clinical studies show that Myomin works as a natural aromatase inhibitor that reduces estradiol and estrone in both men and women. Myomin prevents the conversion of testosterone into unhealthy estrogens (estradiol and estrone) making more testosterone available, and leads to the unhindered production of more beneficial estrogen (estriol) from progesterone, DHEA, and other hormones.
Dr. Jonathan Wright states:
"Myomin is a safe and effective aromatase inhibitor that can block estradiol in both men and women."
According to Dr. Chi, the maker of Myomin:
"The importance of aromatase inhibitors in the treatment of hormone-related conditions has gained momentum in the past few years. One of the advantages of Myomin is that it can be used by men as well as pre- and post-menopausal women."
Estradiol is the most active form of estrogen. Dr. Chi says, "estrogen dictates important mechanisms such as protein production and cell division, and is vital to growth processes not just during puberty, but in adult life. However, its role in signaling cells to divide and multiply can trigger and promote abnormal growth of estrogen-responsive tissues. Minimizing estrogen, therefore, is a clear goal for estrogen-responsive conditions."
Case reports illustrate that Myomin not only reduces estradiol, it also increases the 2/16 estrogen metabolite ratio. According to Dr. Jonathan Wright, the ideal 2/16 ratio should be over 2. If the ratio falls below 2, risk for prostate, testicular, ovarian, breast and uterine cancer increases. Myomin effectively increases the 2/16 ratio.
The primary role of estrogen for women is to maintain the growth and function of the uterus so that the sex organs can become adult sized, and prepares the uterine lining to accept an egg. Good estrogens have a positive affect on skeletal growth, skin, fat and protein deposition, and electrolyte balance for both women and men.
Myomin Plus has the same primary function as Myomin, but with less gastrointestinal side effects. Recommended for those (about 2%) who experience boating, upset stomach, etc when taking Myomin. Notopterygium incisium has been added to counteract those gastrointestinal side effects. See the Supplement Facts tab on either product page for the full list of ingredients.
Fibroid tumors are usually benign (non-cancerous) tumors occurring in the uterus. Medically, fibroids are also referred to as myomas or leiomyomas, and are considered to be a woman's fibrosis condition that is usually associated with estrogen dominance.
Women who experience uterine fibroid symptoms may suffer from pelvic pain, abnormal menstruation, and a variety of other conditions. Pregnancy may be complicated, resulting in miscarriage, premature birth, and other difficulties.
Myomin can be particularly effective for fibroid tumors because it helps to metabolize estradiol, the most active form of estrogen, which essentially "spurs" tumors to grow. When estridol is properly metabolized, it lessens the tendency for estrogen to promote tumor growth.
Case studies from many different health care providers report that Myomin has shown to be particularly effective for helping to reduce fibroid tumors. For example:
Dr. Schueler of Virgina reports about a 40-year-old female patient with a 10cm fibroid. After taking Myomin for 6 months, her tumor reduced greatly in size.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) may be caused by an imbalance of hormones, including excess testosterone, estrogen dominance, insulin resistance, or a combination of these. Likewise, endometriosis is thought to be caused by hormonal imbalances, including estrogen dominance. Myomin can help with both conditions, as it promotes proper hormone balance within the body.
A clinical study was conducted on 255 patients with ovarian cysts and endometriosis. After 5 months, Myomin was effective in 147 patients (57.6%), while some improvement was observed in 87 patients (34.1%). No effect was observed in only 21 patients.
Managing PCOS involves inducing ovulation, making the menstrual cycle normal and reducing associated symptoms. In many cases, supplementation with progesterone is also recommended.
Myomin can be helpful for managing fibrocystic breasts, often associated with estrogen dominance.
A study from Chang Hai Hospital involved 75 cases of fibrocystic breasts (70 women ages 18 to 52 years old and 5 men ages 62 to 64 years old). Sixty five percent of the women were under 35 years old. 25 cases were in the control group while 50 cases were in the Myomin group. Results of the study revealed that, in 14 cases, the fibrocystic breast completely cleared after 1 month of taking myomin while, in 16 cases, the fibrocystic breast reduced 50% in size. Among the five men in the study, the cysts cleared completely in 3 cases. Complete results of the study are enumerated below:
Myomin on Fibrocystic Breast in Men and Women
Number of cases
Overall the effective rate of Myomin is more than 60% compared to the control group's 12% rate. In the Myomin group, in 48 out of 50 cases, associated pain cleared or tremendously reduced (p value <0.05) while in the control group, pain reduced in only 12 out of 25 cases.
Reducing estrogen can also help reduce abdominal fat, which is relatively common among the middle-aged.
Excess abdominal fat has been associated with decreased testosterone levels and increased estradiol (estrogen) levels. As fat accumulates in the abdomen, aromatase activity increases, causing more testosterone to be converted into estradiol.4 This leads to a troublesome cycle, that unless addressed, can cause serious weight loss frustration.
In many cases, exercise and a healthy diet are not enough to reduce belly fat. Often, hormone imbalances must be addressed as well for successful weight loss to occur. Read our blog The Skinny on Fat - An the Role Hormones and Obesogens Play.
Including Myomin into your weight loss protocol will block aromatase, effectively preventing testosterone from being converted into estradiol. This leads to more muscle mass and the loss of abdominal weight.5 Read more about hormone balance and weight loss here.
Dr. Jonathan Wright points out that excess aromatization of testosterone into estrogen is usually accompanied by insulin resistance; hence, those who have Type II diabetes and/or are overweight (especially in the abdomen) will benefit from Myomin to reduce their estrogen level, and thus reduce belly fat and help manage insulin resistance. Also read about Ketsumeisei to help manage insulin resistance.
While there may be conflicting reports regarding the role of estradiol in the development of prostate cancer, there is mounting evidence demonstrating estradiol's effect on prostate cancer.
What we do know is that estrogen does promote the development of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Estrogen stimulates the cells in the tissue surrounding the prostate, leading to urinary symptoms associated with prostate disease (Eur J Cancer. 2008; 44(7):928-36). Furthermore, in one study, BPH patients were found to have greater estradiol levels than those without BPH (Urology.2007; 69(4):708-13).
While some studies show that there is no relationship between serum estradiol and prostate cancer, this may be explained by the fact that prostate cells produce their own estradiol locally. Estradiol may be high around the prostate, but it may not show up in a blood test. Local synthesis of estrogen has been thought to play a role in prostate cancer development (Minerva Endocrinol. 2006; 31(1):1-12).
Dr. Jonathan Wright states in his article that prostate cancer development and andropause (male menopause, wherein testosterone levels decrease and estrogen levels increase) are associated. This may be because when men reach andropause, the ratio of estrogens to androgens can reach up to 40%. He recommends that men avoid regular soy consumption as this can potentially increase estrogen.
Myomin can be helpful to restore normal estrogen and testosterone levels in men.
Although postmenopausal women have significantly reduced estrogen production, their risk of certain estrogen-related conditions still exists. Factors that affect their risk include long-term hormone stimulation, overexpression of aromatase, xenoestrogens, low progesterone, and belly fat.
Those who have been on HRT for a long time are exposed to long-term hormone stimulation. According to a study, among women with fibrocystic breasts for over 20 years who have been exposed to hormone stimulation, 17% developed breast cancer. 6
Incorporating Myomin into a postmenopausal supplement protocol will help to ensure healthy estrogen metabolism and hormone balance.
We learned from the 2002 Women's Health Initiative Study that synthetic hormones can increase the risk for breast cancer, heart disease, stroke and blood clots. Chi Enterprises, the manufacturer of Myomin states:
"Those who are taking hormones, bioidentical or synthetic, should also take Myomin in order to prevent the conversion of testosterone and other hormones into estradiol and estrone, the harmful estrogens."
According to a recent study, HRT users (with or without progesterone) have a 44% increased risk for ovarian cancer. Those using an estrogen patch have a 13% higher ovarian cancer risk. Those who use intravaginal estrogen have a 23% increased ovarian cancer risk (JAMA. Nov 2009). 7
The risk may not only be from estrogen but from other hormones as well. Various hormones including progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA have some kind of impact on the three forms of estrogen: estrone, estradiol and estriol.
By blocking the aromatase enzyme, Myomin is able to stop or reduce the synthesis of estrone and estradiol from progesterone, DHEA, androstenedione, and testosterone. Furthermore, Myomin may also loosely inhibit the synthesis of estrone into 16OH-estrone, as discussed above.

DIM promotes beneficial estrogen metabolism and healthy hormonal balance1,2,3. This optimizes the ratio of estrogen metabolites that is crucial for breast3, uterine4, cervical5, and prostate6 health. Women and men also use DIM as an integral part of succesful weight management programs. See note below for choosing Myomin and/or DIM.
Calcium D-Glucarate is a relatively common nutrient found in many fruits and vegetables. Many believe that this nutrient aids the body in the elimination of many harmful substances and helps to lower abnormally high levels of steroid hormones including estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone. Both of these effects may help to protect against the development of certain tumors.
Progesta-Care Natural Progesterone
Natural progesterone is used to maintain a normal level of progesterone and a balanced ratio of estrogen to progesterone. Natural USP progesterone is biologically identical to the hormone women produce, and offers an alternative to taking synthetic hormones. Additionally, it protects against the undesirable side effects of excess estrogen.
Myomin is a formula of Chinese herbs that has been shown to metabolize excess unhealthy estrogen and acts as an aromatase inhibitor. Hospital research has shown that Myomin helps to reduce both the number and size of fibroids, fibrocystic breast cysts, and ovarian cysts. This formula also contains herbs that are touted by the PDR for Nutritional Supplements as having anti-tumor properties.
DIM is derived from a blend of cruciferous vegetables including broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts. Research shows it helps can help metabolize unhealthy circulating estrogens (estrone, estradiol) into the good form (estriol) for both women and men. Like Myomin, DIM is also considered an aromatase inhibitor. DIM is generally recommended for those who are menstruating (twenties and early thirties) or premenopausal (mid-thirties on) with higher estrogen levels.
Myomin is often suggested for those who are menopausal to post-menopausal because it is not as strong of a metabolizer as DIM; although, Myomin can be used by premenopausal women, as well.
Myomin does have actions that differ from DIM; therefore, some women choose to take them together for a more aggressive approach. For example, Myomin contains an herb that can help support over-worked adrenal glands. It also contains curcumin; according to the Physicians Desk Reference (PDR) for Nutritional Supplements, "curcumin and other curcuminoids have been found to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antifungal, and immune-modulating effects".
Having an initial hormone test can help determine how much estrogen metabolizing one may need and will establish baseline results that can be used as a comparison for future tests. Periodic hormone testing can allow for any necessary dosage adjustments regarding the intake of DIM and/or Myomin.
Balance is the key to hormonal health; therefore, it is a good idea not to exceed the recommended doses on the product labels and watch out for signs of over metabolizing your estrogen. A good indication that estrogen has been over metabolized would be hot flashing that did not occur prior to adding DIM and/or Myomin to your regimen.
It is very important to understand that what may be true for one person is not necessarily true for another. The journey of hormonal changes is an individual one. What this also implies is that the usage of products for one individual can be quite different from that of another.
Note: Those taking DIM and/or Myomin for estrogen dominance and do not experience a reduction in symptoms or unhealthy estrogen levels may want to consider adding Calcium D-Glucarate to their regimen. This dietary supplement helps make sure that used hormones are eliminated from the body rather than reabsorbed into the blood stream where they can be deposited in tissues and cells.
The Townsend Newsletter – Myomin, Natural Aromatase Inhibitor for Estrogen-Related Conditions.
"A human study involved 60 post-menopausal women with cysts. Post-menopausal women were studied because their estradiol levels are more stable than those of premenopausal women. Initially, the average estradiol level was 74.58 pg/ml. After only 10 days on Myomin, their average estradiol level reduced to 38.84 pg/ml. The fibroids, cysts, and the associated pain gradually reduced."
"Another study was conducted on both pre- and post-menopausal women with ovarian cysts. In one study from the Chang Hai Hospital in Shanghai, China, 85 female patients with ovarian cysts were involved, with ages ranging from 27 to 64 years old (more than 50% of them between 34 and 45 years old). Out of the 85, 40 cases were related to endometriosis (hyatidiform cyst), 44 cases were simple ovarian cysts…after 1 to 3 courses of the herbal formula, the cysts and symptoms of 15 patients completely cleared with no recurrence 3 months after the study. In 34 patients, the size of the cyst reduced by 50% and some of the associated symptoms were relieved."
One study involved men and women with fibrocystic breasts. In three of the five men in the study, their cysts cleared completely. In that same study, 65% of the women were under 35 years old, demonstrating that this herbal formula is not only limited to postmenopausal women.
